CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Ashelia B'nargin Dalmasca, or Ashe
Age: 19
Canon: Final Fantasy XII
Canon Point: Post-game
Character Information: Here!
Personality:
Ashe is the deposed princess of the Kingdom of Dalmasca, and her biggest motivation is to throw off the Archadian Empire. She is willing to go to any lengths to do this, amounting to the majority of the plot being ways for her to get nethicite shards, which amount to magic nukes. Throughout much of the game she also desires revenge, though at the same time, she makes it clear that she doesn't want open war, if for no reason other than that her country would be the battlefield.
Despite all her running around chasing magic nukes, Ashe is not interested in power for power's sake. In fact, she's surprised when someone flat-out calls her "power-needy." While Ashe is of course very aware of what her goals and motivations are, she fails to realize what it might look like to everyone else. All she wants is to restore Dalmasca, but she's surprised every single time someone questions her motivations. She has tunnel vision, to be sure, but at the same time, she's still surprised when people aren't on quite the same page as she is. When people tell her what they've seen nethicite do, she tries to tell herself that she'd never let that happen to her.
Ashe is not unaware of the consequences of using the nethicite, having seen what it can do to an entire country, as well as to her personally. Even so, she deems it worth it in order to have her country back. Whether or not she intends to actually use it, she wants to make it clear to Archadia that she has it at her immediate disposal. Seeing Archadia's heir-apparent befriending two orphans from Dalmasca's capital makes her start to soften her stance, and the single moment she begins to question revenge and power happens about halfway through. The huge broadsword that can cut nethicite shards floats over to her, and when she grabs it, it's far too heavy and falls to the floor. It's then that she starts to ask herself what seeking the nethicite really means.
Does she really want power? She gets the nethicite, but then what? She tells herself she can handle it, but does she really? Her quotes when using her limit breaks ("I must be strong," "I must endure," "I must believe.") imply that she doesn't really know the answer. The crux of Ashe's character is that she must do her duty regardless of her personal feelings. She never strays from this resolution, and it's the basis for all of her decisions. Her marriage was a political one, but their feelings for each other were genuine. She still loves her husband, keeping his ring and giving Balthier hers when he wants collateral, and she holds it when she doubts.
She wants to avenge Rasler, but to do so to her satisfication would instigate the war she wished to avoid. She never once wavers, but at the same time, she has to keep reassuring and pushing herself to do what she feels is right by her people. She is not unkind, but she cannot be soft. Her internal struggles lead her to methods she may not have otherwise considered, which in turn make her internal struggle worse. When she stops telling herself what she must do, and just is herself, everything comes much easier.
While she isn't quite the planner Vayne is, she's a capable strategist. Her strength is coming up with plans on the fly and quickly changing them should anything get disrupted, as opposed to something more drawn out. That isn't to say she's incapable of long-term planning. Ashe is one of the more level-headed characters; while she gets pretty emotional, it doesn't immediately distract her. Initially she finds out that the gang stole an invaluable relic, and while she's furious, it will have to wait until they get to safety. When she gets betrayed by her right hand in the Resistance, she follows along until the opportunity to get away emerges. After her husband's death, she staged her own suicide and ran off to start plotting against the empire. More than once, she tells her party to be quiet because she's thinking when an unpleasant surprise turns up. She is calm and patient when it's called for, no matter how much she might not want to be.
Despite leading an underground resistance, Ashe isn't one for subtlety and subterfuge, though she will use it when it's to her advantage. When she has to get into the Empire, she sneaks in through the back door. The first time the audience meets her, she's just blown up a significant portion of her palace. She doesn't like working with pirates and thieves, and tries to distance them from her when they're all first captured by telling their captors that said piraes and thieve are innocent, but she initially has exactly zero problem using them when she needs to sneak away. It's an available and valuable resource, and she isn't about to throw it away.
As the game progresses, Ashe is willing to work with the Empire's heir apparent, up to befriending him herself. After meeting with the gods, she puts her desire for revenge aside, and starts to believe in humanity more. She is able to stop herself before she takes more magic nukes, and in the end just wants her country back. When she gets it, she's finally able to put the past behind her.
